Goldman Sachs reported fourth quarter earnings that shot past analyst’s expectations; Goldman reported a net income of $4.95 billion, or $8.20 per share, topping expectations of $5.20 a share. Today's news is a definite improvement from the $2.12 billion, or $4.97 per share the company lost in the same quarter last year. President Obama announced his plan to regulate big banks; the proposal will limit commercial banks from making trades for their own accounts. They also said there will be new limits set to control banks ability to make high risk trades, the government will also try to have some type of control over the size of large banks so they won't pose a risk to the economic system. Stocks fell today as investors showed concern over the President's new proposal. Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 219 points, the Nasdaq Composite Index fell 26 points and the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index fell 22 points. Bond prices rose, the yield on the benchmark 10-year note fell to 3.59 from 3.65 Wednesday. Commodities fell as the dollar rose; gold fell $9.60 to $1,103.00, crude oil prices fell $1.66 to $76.08.
