    Default Investment Management Firms

Investment management firms (who typically manage large accounts on behalf of customers such as pension funds and endowments) use the foreign exchange market to facilitate transactions in foreign securities. For example, an investment manager bearing an international equity portfolio needs to purchase and sell several pairs of foreign currencies to pay for foreign securities purchases.

Some investment management firms also have more speculative specialist currency overlay operations, which manage clients' currency exposures with the aim of generating profits as well as limiting risk. Whilst the number of this type of specialist firms is quite small, many have a large value of assets under management (AUM), and hence can generate large trades.

Let's say a person wants to invest in a simple total-market stock index fund, and nothing else (besides bonds, etc). Should that person hold total-market stock index funds with multiple investment management firms rather than have their entire investment with one firm? For instance, by holding total-market stock index funds with Fidelity, Vanguard, and Schwab, as opposed to just one of them.I'm not talking about diversifying the allocation of the portfolio itself, since all of the index funds would be almost identical, and even one broad index fund is already diversified all by itself. Rather, I'm asking about reducing the risk of holding all one's investments with one firm, if there is any risk to doing that.

    Define Investment Management Firms

Do you want to work in IB? for a Hedge Fund? Mutual Fund?

Take that with a grain of salt. It all depends on your specialty and then on your philosophies.

I use Scottrade, it's a discount broker so you'll have to make all your own decisions...I am happy with them.
